Early Years Foundation Stage
Early Reading & Phonics
At Eastfield, we follow the scheme ‘Read, Write, Inc’ (RWI) to teach phonics. We start by teaching the programme in your child’s Reception year and continue until they have progressed through the whole reading scheme, usually this is during years One or Two.
Children start by learning the Set 1 sounds and progress to learning sounds that pairs or groups of letters make (Special Friends). Click here to hear the sounds your child will learn.
Children are then taught to use Fred Talk and to blend these sounds together. Once your child can blend the sounds, they will start to read green words using the sounds they have learnt. As soon as children can read green words, they begin to read stories in their Read, Write, Inc sessions. Each storybook is matched to the sounds they can already read, which sets them up for success and helps to build their confidence with reading. It is through these storybooks that we teach children red words, which are irregular words that are not phonetically plausible and cannot be sounded out (Fred talked). Each storybook is taught in the same way, with children practising reading the green words in the story and also the red words, before they begin to read the book. Children will then read the book several times to help build their fluency and comprehension skills.
Children are taught in small groups which reflect their phonic knowledge and reading fluency. We regularly assess children so that they are taught in a RWI group which matches their phonic knowledge. We make sure that pupils read books that are closely matched to their increasing phonic ability so they experience early reading success and gain confidence that they are readers.
Once children are able to read words and stories, they will bring home a reading book that matches the one they have read in their phonics group. Please support your child to read this book.

Early Years Maths
Across the Early Years Foundation Stage, children are introduced to early number and new maths skills through the Numberblocks Programme devised by the NCETM (National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics). The characters bring maths to life whilst providing children with an understanding of number facts, mathematical vocabulary and introduces them to new mathematical concepts. Children have opportunities to consolidate what they have been taught during carpet sessions, through continuous provision.
Children in Reception also follow the NCETM Mastering Number Programme. This programme develops children’s fluency with number facts.

Inspire Maths
At Eastfield Primary School we use a mastery approach to teaching maths. We do this through Inspire Maths. It is a whole-school primary maths programme that provides everything needed to support a mastery approach to teaching and learning mathematics, and meet the higher expectation of the 2014 National Curriculum.
Inspire maths is based on the leading Singapore Maths series My Pals are Here, used in 100% of Singapore’s state primary schools. It works by using accessible pupil textbooks to introduce concepts in a highly scaffolded way, enabling all children to develop critical thinking skills, make mathematical connections and become confident mathematicians.
At Eastfield we want our children to receive a high-quality mathematics education to help ensure that all pupils are fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, have the ability to reason mathematically and can apply their knowledge and understanding to solve problems. We also want them to have an appreciation of the power of mathematics and a sense of fun and curiosity about the subject.
It is one of only 2 schemes of work approved by the DfE and NCETM. Inspire is a sustained and consistent scheme with a carefully designed spiral progression and an emphasis on a concrete-pictorial-abstract approach.
At Eastfield we have high expectations of every child and are committed to closing the attainment gap and ensuring that no child is left behind. As such, our expectation is that the large majority of pupils will progress ‘through the programmes of study at broadly the same pace.’ Ofsted Handbook September 2015.

Power of Reading
Across Early Years and Year 1, we follow the CLPE’s Power of Reading book based approach for our literacy lessons. This allows us to select high quality core texts to develop children’s comprehension and writing skills as well as developing their love for reading. The Power of Reading enables the children to have a deeper understanding of a variety of texts, author’s language, the impact of illustrations and opens the discussion of life experiences. Creative teaching approaches allow for children to develop their drama, art and speaking skills as well as deepening their understanding of texts and providing children with a meaningful context for writing. During carpet sessions, the story is revealed in parts at a time to develop children’s interest in the story, prediction skills and language skills. The core books chosen are focused on for a couple of weeks and allow staff to plan for a variety of cross curricular activities that are challenging and enjoyable.

Science
Our Science Principles
Good Science occurs at Eastfield when…….
- Children are working as a team and are actively engaged
- Children are asking questions, making predictions and are given the opportunity to explore using good quality resources
- Children are using scientific vocabulary in the correct context.
- Children are given the opportunity to talk about what they know/are learning/ have learnt
- Children are able to use the local area to explore.
Our Vision
At Eastfield, children are given many opportunities to learn through practical activities and real-life experiences, developing their scientific skills in the process. The ‘Working Scientifically’ skills form a large part of our curriculum and support the children through planning various investigations and evaluating their results. As a result, they take ownership of their learning and form a stronger understanding of the topics that they are studying.
At Eastfield, we regularly participate in science lessons in the wider environment and we also have visitors from a variety of different backgrounds. We aim to show children the different contexts in which science can be used and the variety of professions that include this
We hope that this inspires the children to investigate the world around them and that it inspires them to take their learning of science further and extend this beyond school.

P.S.H.E
At Eastfield Primary School we aim to promote healthy, independent and responsible members of society. We encourage all our pupils to play a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community through their classes, the school council, assemblies and community events.
Our pupils are given opportunities in PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) & SRE (Sex and Relationship Education) lessons and assemblies to develop confidence, self-motivation and an understanding of their rights and responsibilities within our diverse society.
We teach PSHE in a variety of ways: as a discrete subject ( see Kapow lesson overview below), through circle time sessions, discussions in our values lessons, via assemblies and through other subjects such as RE, History, Geography, Literacy, Maths and Science, as well as through educational visits, community work and activities.
Relationship & Sex Education and Health Education (RSHE)
We want all children to grow up healthy, happy, safe, and able to manage the challenges and opportunities of modern Britain. That is why, from September 2020, all primary age children will be taught Relationships and Health Education. These subjects are designed to equip your child with knowledge to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships as well as preparing them for a successful adult life. The world for all young people looks very different from the way it did 20 years ago when this curriculum was last updated – these changes bring the content into the 21st century, so that it is relevant for your child.
